Standing Tall After a Tough Fight: The Political Journey of Cheshire’s Jim Jinks
On Tuesday, August 11, 2026, Democratic voters across Connecticut’s 13th State Senate District went to the polls in a contested primary for an open seat. The district covers all of Meriden plus portions of Cheshire, Middletown, and Middlefield. When the unofficial tallies from the Secretary of the State’s office were complete, party-endorsed State Representative Jonathan “Jack” Fazzino of Meriden had secured the nomination with 3,157 votes (63.2 percent). Cheshire Town Councilor Jim Jinks finished with 1,841 votes (36.8 percent) out of 4,998 total ballots cast.
The Cheshire Town Council convened for a special meeting on Tuesday, August 4, 2026, in the Mary Baldwin Room at the Cheshire Public Library. The venue shift was necessary because early primary voting was underway in the council chambers. Led by Council President and Mayor Peter Talbot, the meeting covered key community infrastructure updates, heated public debates on surveillance and traffic safety, and emotional personnel announcements.
When Joyrides Meet Turf and Technology
Opinion | Cheshire Connecticut Phoenix News By Richard Reggie Smith, Research/Editor Creative Commons 4.0 License August 12, 2026
Cheshire police identified the teen through Flock license-plate-reader cameras already operating in town. The technology scanned the vehicle’s plate and provided the lead that allowed officers to secure an arrest warrant.
Speakers argued that continuous scanning of license plates feels like an invasion of privacy, that the data could be misused, and that a safe community does not need permanent surveillance.
📰 Cheshire Community Update: Primary Voting, Surveillance Debates, and Late-Summer Events
CHESHIRE, CT — It is a busy season in Cheshire, marked by state and local primary elections, high-stakes community safety debates, and an active schedule of late-summer sports and cultural events. Here is the latest digest of what is happening around town for readers of the Cheshire Ct Phoenix News.
🗳️ Politics: Primary Turnout and Key Matchups
Connecticut's primary elections brought local voters out to the polls, though physical turnout at the Cheshire High School voting district was notably slow on election day. Local election moderators attributed the quiet polling stations to strong resident participation in the state's newly expanded early voting options.
-
Gubernatorial Primary: At the top of the ballot, Governor Ned Lamont secured the Democratic nomination, defeating challenger Josh Elliott.
-
State Senate 13th District: Cheshire Town Councilor Jim Jinks mounted a highly competitive primary challenge against party-endorsed State Representative Jack Fazzino. The race carries heavy weight for local representation, as no Republican candidate filed to run for the seat in November.
-
U.S. House 5th District: In the Republican primary, Chris Shea defeated Jonathan De Barros, securing his spot on the November ballot to challenge incumbent U.S. Representative Jahana Hayes.
🚨 Local News: Town Safety Infrastructure and Storm Damage
A packed house at the Cheshire Town Council meeting highlighted growing community tension over the town’s deployment of 12 Flock Safety license plate readers. Dozens of residents voiced privacy concerns and called for the removal of the network.
Defending the infrastructure, Cheshire Police Chief Fred Jortner highlighted the technology's utility, citing its role in identifying a suspect wanted for causing $5,000 in vandalism to the Cheshire High School band practice field.
In other news, local emergency crews responded to a heavy house fire on Redwood Drive caused by a suspected lightning strike during a recent severe storm. The Cheshire Fire Department successfully contained the fire to the attic and exterior. All residents evacuated safely without injury.
🏆 Sports: National All-Americans and Postseason Runs
Cheshire's youth and scholastic sports programs are wrapping up historic summer campaigns while preparing for the fall transition.
-
Softball Stars Honored: Following an undefeated season and their second straight Class LL State Championship, Cheshire High School softball standouts Jenica Matos and Jordan McCue were officially named national All-Americans.
-
Little League Sectionals: The Cheshire Youth Baseball 12-U All-Stars kept their postseason run alive with a dramatic 5-2 extra-innings win against Simsbury at Montowese Park, showing strong resilience after an early tournament loss.
-
Fall Registrations Open: Sign-ups are actively underway via the Cheshire Parks & Recreation Portal and the Cheshire Soccer Club for autumn youth soccer, football, and cheerleading leagues.
🎸 Activities: Music and Festivals Around Town
The seasonal community calendar features an array of free outdoor performances and long-standing town traditions.
